Morning After

Diamond sparkling drips

Cool-morning peace

Of a rain washed world

Waiting to drip-dry.

Dewdrop encrusted leaves

Gradually let their load fall

In diamond sparkling drips.

Softly water blurred puddles

Reflect the blue upturned sky

Smudged with white cotton remnants

Of rainstorm clouds.

Starlings perch self-importantly

On TV aerials across suburbia

Fizzing and bubbling

Their squeaky melodies,

Welcoming the sun into a new day,

And smiling as it bursts onto the wet tarmac

Turning it to glittering golden shine

In a way that only morning sun can do.

I wrote this back in 2001 after an overnight rainstorm and a walk to the bus stop in the morning, which was *stunningly* beautiful. The memory still remains, and this poem is (perhaps) one of my favourites.

I wish i could describe stuff like you do!
“big dead leaf spits rain…” not nearly as poetic, see?

I don’t know what time it is where you are, but this was nice to wake up to:) Very soothing.

Well, this is positive, even if you didn’t just write it. Are you sore today or feeling OK?

It’s a pretty one, and I woke up too tired to think of a fresh poem. I’m achey and sore today, but not so much as yesterday. Though the big bruise is coming along nicely 😉

Oh, what a wonderful world you have created with your words. I wish I could go there right now!
That leaf–is the color real or enhanced? Curiosity, though it really doesn’t matter, it’s beautiful either way!

The leaf is real, but I did use a little bit of enhancement on it in PicMonkey, just to deepen the colours (the original pic was a little bleached).

And thanks – I’m glad you liked the poem so much – it was a glorious morning and I can still remember it, even 13 years later 🙂

  7. I loved this poem but the mere mention of those blasted Starlings.. We have them here and they are soooo annoying. They bomb dive you in the garden, while you’re mowing the lawn, sitting on the porch.. They even built a nest on the door of the bedroom patio upstairs! Trying to get rid of that will be somewhat challenging.. Bleh on the Starlings.. Smiles to the rain and the dew and the morning sunshine. 🙂

Hahah they’re a bit of a pest here, too – I remember very strongly one time as a child, when we were in the city centre having lunch and one flew down and snatched my mum’s sandwich from her hand. She was so surprised, and my sister and I just laughed and laughed.

But if you ever stop and look at one, they’re stunningly beautiful birds, even if they’re cheeky. And if you’ve ever seen them moving en masse,as a huge flock, they’re breathtaking…

Thanks for liking this, though 🙂

That is a wonderful image you presented. There is something magical about the world after a rain storm. Love it!

Yes…I think the best description I ever came across (and I totally forget where this came from) said something about the world looking as if it had just come back from the launderette.

No…it was such a strong moment of absolutely piercing beauty. I think that whole journey was, that morning. I think there was even another poem I got out of it. Or a different morning. I used to get a lot out of those early morning walks 🙂
