At Sunset

I waited for you by our tree

On the hill watching

The sun set lighting the clouds on fire,

One glorious explosion

Before day yields to night

And hides

The tears on my face that fall

When you don’t show,

Or say goodbye.

Recess (Going On Holiday)

“Come and play” the soft voice whispers in my ear,

And I open my eyes to see who is there.

“Come and play” it whispers again

As I rub and stretch the sleep from my skin.

“It’s nice out here. Come and see.”

But I ignore the words and drink my tea.

“Please come and play. I’m lonely and bored.”

Instead I read the news and leave the voice ignored.

“Won’t you at least look outside?”

I glance at the pile of dishes needing to be washed and dried.

“Isn’t the sky looking especially blue?”

It does remind me of the waters of Corfu.

Maybe I’ll step outside for a moment, or two

Feel the sun on my face, let the breeze set my hair askew.

But then, perhaps, a drive might be nice

Go somewhere new, let fate roll the dice.

“Come and play” the sky whispered in my ear,

So I packed my bags. Au revoir, my dear.

We Should Be Free

It’s not about you,

It’s not about me,

It’s not about who you think I should be.

Because it’s about you

And it’s about me,

It’s all about how we should be free.

Because it’s about her

And it’s about him,

It’s about being happy with the color you’re living in.

It’s not about hate,

It’s not about sin,

It’s about being able to love the one you’re with.

And it’s about standing

Up for what’s right,

Raising your voice to join in the fight

To be who you are

To see past judgmental eyes

And love the broken and bruised and comfort their cries.

Because it’s about me

And it’s about them,

The children ripped away in Bethlehem.

And it’s about you

And it’s about walls,

What will you do when the angel calls?

Because it’s about you

And it’s about me,

It’s about all of us and who we’re meant to be.

Because it’s about hope

And learning to hear

The rhythm between the beats and the voices shouting: “We’re here!”

For we will not be quiet,

We will not be kept down.

We are rising up, and we are standing our ground.

For we are not afraid,

We are all one family,

And this is how it’s meant to be…

We are free!

Remembrance

I remember

The day of smoke and blood

When bodies and ash

rained from the sky.

I remember

the day men held innocence hostage,

judged it guilty,

and executed it

-death by hellfire.

I remember

the ground shaking

as buildings crumbled,

and all wore shades of gray.

Death colors us all the same.

But I remember

how Courage walked the streets

and flew through the air

and heroes were born

and they gave us hope,

though some died

and we cried for their sacrifice.

Most of all,

I remember the silence

as the world mourned,

and strangers comforted

others in the streets as compassion,

not fear,

brought us all together

as one.

Scrappy Little Things

Then the whole world turned right-side up

Inside those big brown eyes

Where hung the universe

Like pearls on a string.

Another hidden room opened

Specially designed

To house an infinite, unconditional love

Wearing floppy ears and a tan coat,

A colossal personality in a tiny body

Contained behind a generous, exuberant grin.

*Today was Clear the Shelters day and though I went there for one dog, I ended up with a totally different one…the one I was meant for. Scrappy is his name.  He chose me, and I couldn’t be happier.

Last Request

Now I lay me down to sleep.

For my bones, do not weep.

I do not lay here wanting grief;

In my rest I’ve found relief.

No more worrying over day to day affairs;

No more crying over unhappy cares.

In the earth I now have peace;

In the quiet all has ceased.

All my sorrows are washed away;

No more suffering, no more dismay.

Weep not, I say, for what is gone

Look to others, look to your own.

Care for those who continue to struggle,

Care for those who cannot juggle

The mind’s chess game with them as pawn.

Weep for the living, those who walk alone.

Turn your eyes and hands to them,

Let your love be their stem.

For it may be their life was spared

Because of you and those who cared

To see the pain behind their tears,

Who understood and calmed their fears.

Then come the morning and the rising sun

Come to me and say, “Thy will was done.”

And I will smile in my sleep

Because you did not weep.

*Probably a good idea to not snack too close to bedtime…you know, in case you wake up crying from a dream you can’t remember and the lines to a poem running through your head and neither will let you get back to sleep.

Dancing Stars

If you love her

make her shine.

Make her glow where all can see.

For star she was and star she is,

and star she always will be.

Make her shine

bright as the moon,

bright as the moon at sea.

For love will do

as love has done

for all eternity.

And in the end

she’ll know your love

was her’s with certainty.

So make her shine,

Make her glow,

And she’ll love fearlessly.

*Sometimes, you just need time, space, and quiet to heal and recharge. ❤
