Oh, the things I’ve missed
By not being present
By being ‘there but not’
As I’ve waited, waited
Waited
For…what?
For a future never promised?
For a hope yet to unfold?
For a dream set to unravel?
For desires I cannot hold?
Silly things like sunny days
Have gone their way unheeded
(Or heeded in peripheral ways
My attention elsewhere needed)
And bigger things like children’s hopes
Let down, the fault is mine
Though not the blame, for life
LIFE got in the way,
Yet still her little grin will shine
Oh, what I’ve missed
By missing out this time.
And other things; connections lost
Along life’s merry path
For stumbling along those rocky roads
My blinkered eyes horizon-bound
Chilled conversations turned to frost
As friendships, winter found.
I’ve missed them so and missing still
From life, from screen, from mind
And though
Eventually
Those holes will fill
T’will not be of the same kind.
Yet more has fallen
Waysided
As paths divergent went
A laugh, a smile
A light in eyes
Moments which we once were lent
And took our fill, not quenched
Not spent
Hours, within each other, drenched
With all that was and wasn’t to be
I recall those stolen moments’ scent
And daft things like your hair
Your wrists, your knees…
Oh, such things I’ve missed
In missing these.
Happiness too,
Here, in my face
In every second in this place
I have the crutch of wonderous love
Supported now, I still somehow
Look past the familiarity of
That which I’m used to
And so for granted taken
One day I’ll see how good it’s been
How much I’ve needed
How this care, unbreaken since forever
Has been the thing
Holding me
Together
Yet this,
This too
I’ve missed…
And so
It’s now
Or never
Time to find my stumbling way
To seek gratitude in the day-to-day
To value each and every way
The people around me, all ways, always
Show me the truth
I’ve never been without;
I’m connected
Entangled
Enchanted
LOVE is here
(and there
(and everywhere))
And all the time I miss it
It’s me who’s missing out.
Thanks for sharing this so I can read it again – one of Lizzi’s best.

It’s been knocking around in my mind for a while – what I’m missing by wishing my time away, what I’ve missed by being ill, by being back here instead of in America…all the things.
I just have to appreciate the NOW, and each Now, as it happens.
And thanks *glowy*

I do love your poetry the mostest. Your words are like a sweet peach on my tongue. I want to,close it and keep the whole thing inside.

Now THAT is a delicious comment and a beautiful compliment. THANK YOU ❤

(P.S. I may or may not be slightly imagining that, and the peach being slightly bursty and sweet juice running all over *censors train of thoughts*)

Perfect. Missing out on the present by being too consumed with the future?
Enjoy the love all around you. You have wonderful people in your life.

Well, I think I need to remind myself not to miss out. And to enjoy what’s passed without dwelling on it and again, missing what I have now.
I’m so lucky to have the people in my life I do have, Precious. You all make such a difference 🙂

Ahhhh THAT’S where you’ve been. I’ve missed you. And I’ve missed SSS and hearing about Doug, and…everything. I’m glad you’re back online and I hope to follow the threads and catch up soon.
I’m feeling LOTS better, thanks, and…yeah, a VERY tough task but one well worth doing. No point pining for things which are no more, or which may never be.

Beautifully lovely poetry from a gorgeous soul! It is human nature, I believe, to be so focused on all but the present moment. You captured that lack of mindfulness perfectly.

Ay and it does none of us any good as we neglect the only time we ever really HAVE…the present is a gift we squander too readily. And yet when we have such glorious memories and such hopes for the future, it’s entirely understandable.
Thank you for thinking it beautiful though xoxoxox

I have always found the struggle between riffs of time beautiful. I’m a strange being who lives precariously in balance between then and now and now and later.

You sound like an *awesome* being to me 🙂 I love that; ‘the riffs of time’, like music which takes a phrase and repeats it, altering slightly with each new stanza…gorgeous imagery.

Thanks so much, Mama Zen, and I hope that you and I both manage to get ourselves further along the pathway of NOT missing out… *sigh* 🙂
