#NaPoWriMo What’s On The Cards?

Whats on the cards Joker Joker Joker

Higgledy piggledy Joker-me
The cards have come to play, you see
Where’s the lady? 1, 2, 3…
Higgledy piggledy Joker-me

Kings and crowns and hand-me-downs
Be entertained by jesting clowns
Who wear their smiles to hide their frowns
Kings and crowns and hand-me-downs

Cuddle-me, muddle-me, Joker-dear
A frown’s a smile and a smile’s a tear
Reach out your hands for the thing you fear
Cuddle-me, muddle-me, Joker-dear

Seek the wicked Queen of Spades
Whose heart is black as coal-mine days
She takes you down with poison blades
Seek the wicked Queen of Spades

Haggle-me, straddle-me, Joker-game
The King’s come out to lay the blame
No more the Queen, no longer the same
Haggle-me, straddle-me, Joker-game

Jump the jolly one-eyed Jack
Who’s never there when you look back
He’ll make you scream – he’s got the knack
Jump the jolly one-eyed Jack

Follow-me, hollow-me, Joker-rules
The House knows how to play the fools
It makes them think they have the tools
Follow-me, hollow-me, Joker-rules

You can keep your two of hearts
Stranger-danger; diamond starts
What we conjoined now tear apart
You can keep your two of hearts

Angle-me, strangle-me, Joker-strife
Not mother, not lover, no more a wife
I’ll flip the deck and take back my life
Angle-me, strangle-me, Joker-strife

Bring me your wicked five of clubs
I’ll wonder who to tag as subs
Give me a minute; we’ll see what rubs
Bring me your wicked five of clubs

Yelling-me, telling-me, Joker-debt
We drink to game and to soon forget
We put all our chips on a stupid bet
Yelling-me, telling-me, Joker-debt

Gorge me on threes and fives and nines
Show me your darkness and I’ll show you mine
Let me build life where the stars can shine
Gorge me on threes and fives and nines

Story-me, all-of-me, Joker’s done
Beginning’s long-gone and the end’s begun
I’m walking away and I’ll reach the sun
Story-me, all-of-me, Joker’s done.

Hearts and tarts and summer’s day
The Joker knows the games you play
The King is toppled; the Knave can stay
Hearts and tarts and summer’s day

We were meant to split a pack of cards and free-write for five minutes about what we found, then write it up as a poem from there. I don’t have a pack within arm’s reach but I know which card would pick me. Probably. And I spent time ‘freestyling’ as I ran home from boxing. So there’s that.

Like the rhythm of this one. The jauntiness coupled with the darkness.

It reminds me of a Shel Silverstein poem! Love it, Lizzi!! 🙂

The rhythm and rhyme of the poem are lighthearted and fun, like a friendly game of cards. But then it gets serious, heavy, emotional, not lighthearted at all. Which makes it great. I used to play a lot of cards and enjoy the idea of the king and the queen and the jacks and the story. But the question I always had is “Is the ace a one or does it trump the king?”

Do you know that this is one of my ALL TIME favorite pieces of writing from you, dear one. This is incredible brilliance…deep deep bouncing jests that flow flawlessly. Wow. I could read YOU in every single one of those cards…

Ahhh but you know I’m the Joker; the Jester, the Ass and the Knave
I’ll write out my sorrows; my triumphs; my brave
I’ll share all my silliness, broken and true:
Make them laugh; make them laugh; before they laugh at you…

  5. OMG. This calls to mind the card game Beggar My Neighbour – and the fact that I can no longer remember how to play it. Do you know it? Better yet, can you remember how to play?

So light sounding, but such dark content. You played with that well.

I am going to be VERY CAREFUL never to piss you off.

That said I think this is my favourite Lizzi poem of all time.
