#NaPoWriMo Eventually She Jumped

Icarus Falling

Icarus, uncertain, waited

Tethered by choice to the ground

And though it crumbled ‘neath her feet

Maybe the sun would be worse

Maybe if she had time to rehearse

And practice again and again

And again

Life might breathe back in

And the ground reform beneath

Her leaden steps, yet eventually

The dross on her hands

Swallowed her whole – no

Gold was found, no silver

No copper, only ash, so

Forlorn, with faded paper wings

She stepped sideways anyway

Threw herself from the cliff

Leaving destruction behind,

And, too late for sunshine

If she might yet

On the way

Our prompt for today was a palinode, where we retract a statement made in an earlier poem (I chose She was a Sky full of Stars). I decided to retract two statements – 1) that Icarus tried to fly, and 2) that there was anything shiny behind the dross. The sky full of stars has gone dark and there is a crash imminent. Which she chose, too, in spite of the world crumbling around her, so it was stay and die or jump and die.

Good luck, I.

  1. Sometimes silence says more than words ever do. But these words speak volumes.

Painful yes but what a wonderful piece of expression! Small condolence I know.
