No fairydust will help you now

“Once upon a time”

Those very words, that formula

So powerful and steeped within my ken

It brings to mind, unbidden

Stories of challenge and loss and love,

Of fighting off evil and siding with friends;

Of worlds so magical, so filled

With sparkling, glitterbomb bliss

It doesn’t matter what happens:

You know the baddies get killed

And the good guys live

“Happily Ever After”

Because that’s what we all want

We’re programmed from the offset

With ideals to chase

And scripted paper dreams to try to flaunt

No matter that inside we’re drying up

Dehydrating from all the tears we cry

Because someone else’s fairytale

Is always better;

Always somewhere we’d rather live

Instead, and so it seems that ‘Happily’

Is nothing but a lie – a false and shining lure,

A broken promise in the making, to trap you by

To help relieve you of a few pounds

Whether in weight or finance

For you need to lose both

In order to be considered

Worthy of *this* kind

Of storyline.

No fairydust

Will help you now

So you sit

Enrobed

Entrapped

In other people’s

Castles

And

You

Cry.

Powerful. Sad ending though. Often too true :-/

Oh wow! This reminded me of the novel I just read, Damsel Distressed. Both the book and this poem is beautiful!
